Like so many of your adventures, Joshua, my boredom is often relieved in getting away from the digital world and roaming the mountains where I now live, not far from Black Mountain. There is never another view from new crest that won’t display the wonders of God’s creation.
I figured out later that the mountain we had stumbled upon was Lookout Mountain in Montreat. We had started walking from our house into the forest and, an hour or two later, just stumbled onto a trail. My brother reached the top first and begged me not to turned around until I reached the top. I was so thankful he did. When I turned around, I felt like I was on top of the world. Lookout Mountain was a haven for me away from an abusive house and will always be my special place.
Patrick Henry Village, 80-81! Loved the stairwells. My Cub Scout den met on one of those attics. We used to scratch shallow holes under the huge trees and play marbles (that we carried around in a Sucrets tin).
Wow, I just posted this today and already two people who know about PHV. Insane. I thought I was the only one 🤣 and you know about the attics! You’re a real one.
We left PHV for Paul Revere Village in Karlsruhe, 81-83. We had a duplex there because my dad was a Major. PHV was (is?) a refugee “camp” the last time I drove by there in 2015. The Karlsruhe community kept PHV pretty much the way it was when the Army turned it over to them in the mid-90s. Several years ago, I met the lady who lives in our side of the duplex. We were definitely never bored as kids in the early 80s in Germany!
“I’m bored” are my favorite words to hear from my 3 year old (ok, maybe second favorite…”I love you daddy” is much better!). He says it only the way he can and he’s simply stating that he wants more adventure!
Total side note: did you take the pic of the apartments near Heidelberg? I only ask because I lived in Heidelberg between 2015-2016 and walked by those very apartments several times!
I did not take this photo. I miss Heidelberg, though, and dream of taking my wife there someday. Very special place to me. We were in Germany from 1999-2006.
Nice. It’s a beautiful country and I certainly hope to return someday. We loved the old cities and train rides. Frankfurt Hauptbahnhof was my favorite place!
Beautiful.

We have to relearn to embrace that restlessness. It’s hard but necessary if we want to become who God made us to be.
